I would try some different USB cables, shorter lengths etc. Second of all, if you are having IO Error when connecting to the PC it sounds like the USB isn't working right either on your computer or on the device. I will try to format my hd with win98 startup disk. I've purchased one "notebook - desktop" adapter from eBay and now waiting to have it at home.you know how it feels to wait. My hd is a 60gb Hitachi, so, consider what rodney said I think this is the problem. I've tried to format my hd with my friend's xp, same thing. You actually seem to have two questions/problems.įirst of all I don't know why you can't format FAT32 with XP - it should be able to do this just fine, but it would warn you that you wouldn't have the added protection provided by NTFS such as user rights to files etc.
